Johan Fredrik Berwald

Johan Fredrik Berwald ( born December 4, 1787 Stockholm, † August 26, 1861 ) was a Swedish composer.

In addition to his cousin Franz Berwald he considered the most important composer of the family Berwald that produced musicians and composers over several generations. He lived as a traveling virtuoso violinist. From 1803 to 1812 he worked in Saint Petersburg, most recently as concert master of the Imperial Court Chapel. Since 1815 he was concertmaster since 1823 and Kapellmeister in Stockholm.

He composed operettas and vaudeville, string quartets and violin concertos, a string quintet, orchestral works, sonatas, cantatas and romances.
