Johan Niclas Byström

Johan Niclas Byström ( born December 18, 1783 in Filipstad, † March 13 1848 in Italy) was a Swedish sculptor.

Life

Byströms father was a merchant who initially gave him a trader education. In his free time Byström Siegel began to engrave. When the father died, Johan was about 20 years old and was able to realize his dream with the heritage to travel to Stockholm to study there. His mentors in the capital were Johan Tobias Sergel and Louis Masreliez.

In 1809 he received the grand prize of the Royal Academy of Art and a travel grant. He retired in June 1810 then to Rome, which was to become his second home. 1816 and 1821 Byström was briefly in Stockholm and in the latter year he was on his way back to Rome a detour via England and Paris. In 1816 he was appointed deputy professor at the Stockholm Academy of Arts and in 1832 he became a full professor. In the following years he lived mainly in Carrara, where he owned a house and a small marble quarry. Much of the resulting there architectural details and vases he sold in 1838 to the Swedish king.

When he had decided in 1838 to the final return to Stockholm, he had a villa in the Italian style on the island of Djurgården build. According to various sources of his time, the villa was commissioned by Charles XIV John, but since he died during the construction period, Byström himself took over the building. The furniture consisted of many parts, his collated in Italy collection.

1844 Byströms health deteriorated and he returned in a milder climate to Italy, where he died in 1848. A portion of its assets he testamentierte Karolina Bygler who was his housekeeper and his model in Rome and was called by the Italians Eleonora bitstream. His collection was auctioned in 1853 at auction.
