Johann Adam Reincken

Johann Adam Reincken, , Jan Adams (Jean Adam, Jan Adam ) Reincken or Reinken, Reinkink, Reincke, Reinike (. Baptized 10 Dezemberjul / December 20 1643greg in Deventer, . † November 24, 1722 in Hamburg ) was a Dutch / German composer, organist and viol player.

Life and work

Reincken family settled in 1637 in Deventer in the Netherlands. The traditional date of birth of Johann Mattheson of 1623 and the birthplace Wildeshausen be refuted by the baptismal record of 1643 in Deventer. In Deventer Reincken received the early 50s of the 17th century, his first music lessons. From 1654 he studied organ playing and composition with Heinrich Scheidemann in Hamburg.

After a short stint as organist at Deventer, he returned around 1658 back to Hamburg to work there again with Scheidemann. Around 1663, he joined its successor as organist at Hamburg's St. Catherine's Church. Here he worked until his death.

Reincken was not without influence on the musical life of Hamburg. He campaigned in the 1670s for the successful implementation of enhancements to the organ of St. Catherine's Church. In addition, he pushed through more changes and improvements to the sacred buildings of Hamburg and northern Germany. In 1678 he co-founded the Hamburg Opera at the goose market.

His reputation led the young Bach while Lüneburg years, Reincken 1701 in Hamburg to visit, to be trained in organ playing with him. Bach was deeply impressed by Reincken improvisations on the Chorale " An Wasserflüssen Babylon". Later used Bach parts (individual sentences and sentence sequences ) of Reinkens Suite Hortus Musicus Collection ( 1687 ) in his piano compositions BWV 954, 965 and 966

Reincken died in 1722. His grave and epitaph are not in the hamburger, but in St. Catherine 's Church in Lübeck. Here Reincken had bought in 1702 by the family of his son Andreas Kneller a tomb.

Importance

Reincken was one of the most important representatives of the North German organ school. His compositions, reflected primarily spiritual compositions, especially chorales, fugues and sonatas. As an organist he enjoyed an excellent reputation; in particular he was known for his organ improvisations. Few of his works are still preserved, and he is largely forgotten.

2005 in Duchess Anna Amalia Library, a handwritten copy of Bach's Reincken was discovered to water rivers of Babylon.
