Johann Carolus

Johann Carolus ( born March 26, 1575 Mühlbach ( Munster ); † August 15, 1634 in Strasbourg ) was a German printer, bookbinder and publisher in Strasbourg. His father Georg and Jörg Carolus was a pastor and came from Meiningen ( Thuringia). Johann Carolus, who in 1599 acquired by marriage the Strasbourg Civil Rights, took over in 1604 the Jobinschen publisher. Carolus knew in Strasbourg also the offices of a church caretaker and a councilman.

The history of the relation

As a publisher, Carolus was editor of the weekly ratio of all Fürnemmen and gedenckwürdigen Historien, which first appeared in the second or third week of September 1605 in Strasbourg. This is documented by a petition to the Council of the City of Strasbourg, where he vainly sought after publication of the first twelve issues of the grant of a monopoly right. However, the sheet could soon come out afterwards. Johann Carolus there were out continuously until his death in 1634. His son Maurice took over the Offizin and continued the newsprint to 1667.

The oldest extant vintage newspaper 1609; the first year courses are apparently lost. The relationship appeared to 1659 and is recognized by the World Association of Newspapers as the first newspaper in the world. In documents Strasbourg pioneering work of German historian Martin Press wilt came in 1987 together with the Strasbourg archivist Jean -Pierre Kintz. Welke calls the application to the Strasbourg council " the birth certificate of the newspaper".
