Johann Heermann

Johann (es) Heermann ( born October 11, 1585 Raudten, Duchy of Glogau, Silesia, † February 17, 1647 in Lissa ) is one of the most important German hymns poets of the Baroque period.

Life

The son of a furrier first attended the Latin school in town and wife Elisabet 1602-1604 the Breslau Gymnasium. He then studied theology at the University of Strasbourg, and in 1608 he was crowned in Brieg for poet laureate. From 1611, he held the rectory in Köben at Glogau. City fire, plague, Kriegsplünderungen, family suffering, and the Counter-Reformation dominated this time in Silesia, so he already had to give up his 1638 Köbener office and retired to Lissa.

As a songwriter he has been influenced by Martin Opitz and its seal reform. His work has a major influence for Andreas Gryphius, Paul Gerhardt and others. He wrote about 400 songs. Heerman is described as " singer of the tribulation and struggle, but also of the unbroken Glaubensmuts ".

First publications can be found in Devota musica cordis, Hauss and Hertz Musica; Hymns such as O God, thou good God, heart Dearest Jesus, what have you done wrong and O Jesu Christe, true light is passed into the Protestant as well as Catholic hymnals and still in use today. From heart Dearest Jesus, what you have done wrong, there are also several English translations, including by Catherine Winkworth from 1863 under the title O dearest Jesus, what law hast thou broken? . What do you want was sadden you in 1724 based on Bach's chorale cantata What wilt thou grieve, BWV 107

In addition, published by Heermann ascetic writings, eg Heptalogus Christ ( Berlin 1856) and the didactic poems: Praecepta moralia et sententiae and Exercitium pietatis (Latin and German, Breslau 1886) and the poetry collection Teutsche Poemata (1640).

In Bielefeld Brackwede the home for the elderly Johann Heermann House was ( completed in 1968) named after him.
