Johann Jacob Roemer

Johann Jacob Roman ( born January 8, 1763 in Zurich, Switzerland, † January 15, 1819 ibid, also written Roemer ) was a Swiss physician, entomologist and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Roem. ".

Life

Romans was a professor of botany and director of the Old Botanical Garden « zur Katz » the University of Zurich. The plant genus Roemeria Medik. from the family of the poppy family ( Papaveraceae ) has been named after him.

From 1784, he studied medicine and biology at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1786 with a dissertation on a gynecological issue for 1788 med Dr Roman was a member of the Swiss scientific society and then practiced as a physician in Zurich, but which failed to success. This was followed by a position as a doctor at the Zurich infirmary. During the revolutionary years 1799-1803 Romans retired from the faculty of this institution and took over again in 1804, a professor, as this facility Cantonal Institute was. With the Austrian botanist Josef August Schultes, he published the 16th edition of Systema Vegetabilium of Carl Linnaeus. 1793 Roman was elected Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 1808 corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
