Johannes Albrecht Bernhard Dorn

Bernhard Dorn ( born May 11, 1805 in Scheuerfeld, † May 31 1881 in St. Petersburg ) was a German - Russian orientalist.

Life

Dorn studied in Halle and Leipzig first theology, then Oriental Languages ​​, habilitated in 1825 in Leipzig and received in 1826 the professorship of Oriental languages ​​at the University of Kharkov, which he did until 1829 took.

In 1835 displaced as a professor of Asian history at the Oriental Institute at St. Petersburg, he was in 1839 appointed a member of the Academy of Sciences, 1842 as Director of the East Museum and in 1843 to Chief Librarian of the Imperial Library.

In the years 1860-1861 he undertook a journey to the Caucasus, Mazandaran and Gilan south of the Caspian Sea, from where he returned with rich scientific yield. He died on 31 May 1881 in St. Petersburg as a Russian citizen.

Work

Mandrel scientific endeavors were directed initially by the discovery and study of the history and language of the Afghans, including:

  • Grammatical Notes on the Language of the Afghans (St. Petersburg 1845),
  • A chrestomathy of the Pakhtun (St. Petersburg 1847) and the
  • History of the Afghans, translated from the Persian of Neamet - Ullah (London 1829-36, 2 vols ) has established, later on the history and geography of all Iran, Turkistan and the Caucasus countries and the processing of the still unknown provincial dialects of those countries. The result of these studies is the great collective work:
  • Muslim sources for the history of the southern coastal states of the Caspian Sea (St. Petersburg 1850-58, 4 Tle ). In this context, the works of the historian Sayyed Zahiruddin Mar'ashi of European science were available.
