Johannes Bünderlin

John Biinderlin (* 1499 in Linz, † after 1539) was a German Baptist and spiritualist. In part, he is also known as Hans Biinderlin and Johann Wunderl.

Life

About Bünderlins early years little is known. He studied from 1515 to 1519 at the University of Vienna and then worked as a Catholic priest. In 1526 Biinderlin closed under a stay in Augsburg of the radical Reformation Anabaptist movement. In the same year he began to work as a humanist educated secretary and minister at the court of St. Bartholomew from Starhemberk. At the same time he probably had been as head of the Linz Baptist church. A short time later had Biinderlin Linz leave and spent some time at the court of Leonhard of Lichtenstein in the Moravian Mikulov. Soon, however, he also left Nikolsburg and met at the turn of 1528/1529 in Strasbourg. Here he met, among others, on the Anabaptist- Spiritualist Christian preacher Entfelder and the spiritualistic theologian Sebastian Franck. Even with the Silesian reformer Kaspar Schwenckfeld he was in contact. In the years 1529/1530 four Bünderlein published writings in which he formulated its own spiritualistic theology, however, met with in parts of the Anabaptist movement to criticism. In particular, with Pilgram Marpeck developed in those years an intense theological dispute, which also made the inner breaks between more biblicist and spiriutalistischen positions within the South German Anabaptist movement significantly. In his thinking Biinderlin was heavily influenced by Hans Denck.

After his time in Augsburg Biinderlin addressed employees to Constance, whose reformer Johannes Zwick initially confronted him benevolently. After Zwick consultation with John Oecolampadius Biinderlin however, the city was referred to. In 1531 he took part in the disputations between Lutheran and spiritualistic reformers in Prussia. In 1539 Biinderlin was in Ulm, where he supported Schwenckfeld in its conflict with the local priesthood. His other life stages are largely in the dark.
