Johannes Hartmann

John Hartmann, also called Hartmanni, (* 1568 in Amberg, † December 1631 in Marburg) was a polymath and rector at the University of Marburg.

John Hartmann was born in 1568 as the son of a weaver in Amberg and was first bookbinder. Because of his excellent talent, he was supported by the Rector of the Amberger city school and was able, with the support of the City Council of Amberg attend universities Altdorf, Wittenberg and Jena, where he mainly studied mathematics. In 1592 he became professor of mathematics at the University of Marburg, where he received a medical professorship in 1603. 1607 he was finally appointed Rector of the University of Marburg, and in 1609 professor of Chymiatrie.

In addition to his mathematical and medical professor, he was also physician to the Landgrave Moritz.
