John Berger

John Berger ( born November 5, 1926 in Stoke Newington, County of London) is a British writer, painter and art critic and Booker Prize winner.

Life

After studying art at the Chelsea School of Art and the Central School of Art in London, he began a career as a painter. 1948-1955 he worked as a teacher. At the same time, he wrote art criticism, artists' biographies and essays on art. In the 1950s he was active in the peace movement Artists For Peace. In the 1970s, he worked with director Alain Tanner and wrote the screenplays for several films. With its developing novel G., on which he had worked five years, he won the Booker Prize in 1972 surprising. As Berger donated half of the prize money to the Black Panther Party, was a scandal. Then Berger left England and moved to Savoy in France in a mountain village, where he still lives today. In addition to his literary work Berger wrote a number of art historical texts and reviews.

In December 2006, Berger joined a boycott call ( for the area of culture and science ) against the Israeli occupation to the international public. He wants to know the boycott " tactical " understood; that is to say for himself, he refuses to be published by a major mainstream publisher in Israel. He intended to build the state of Israel meet, but do not prevent contact with the individual in Israel.
