John Cipollina

John Cipollina ( born August 24, 1943 in Berkeley, California, † May 29 1989 in San Francisco ) was an American rock musician, best known as the guitarist of posts originating from San Francisco band Quicksilver Messenger Service. The music magazine Rolling Stone chose him at No. 32 of the best guitarists of all time.

Biography

Since 1959, John Cipollina played with various bands in the Bay Area around San Francisco. In 1965 he was a founding member of the band Quicksilver Messenger Service. They performed, among others, at the Fillmore West and the Monterey Pop Festival. 1967 she released her first album titled Quicksilver Messenger Service. The subsequent album of the band, Happy Trails, is considered a milestone in music history and is on the list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time magazine Rolling Stone ranked 189. Cipollina initially remained until 1970 Quicksilver Messenger Service, left the band temporarily and then returned back to 1973 Quicksilver Messenger Service.

In 1970, Cipollina the band Copperhead with which he recorded an album. A second album was recorded, but remained unreleased until now. After dissolution of the group in 1973 until his death in 1989, Cipollina played in numerous bands, including Terry & the Pirates, The Dinosaurs, Raven, Zero, One, and Thunder And Lightning, as well as with Nick Gravenites.

Cipollina, who suffered from chronic, severe asthma since his childhood, nevertheless became a chain smoker. On 29 May 1989 he was admitted because of an asthma attack in the Marin General Hospital, where he died during the night of emphysema. Live, he was seen for the last time on 13 May 1989. Cipollinas ashes were scattered on Mount Tamalpais on 1 June 1989 in the vicinity of San Francisco.

He is now next to bands like Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead as one of the founders of the San Francisco psychedelic rock music.

His brother Mario Cipollina (born 1954 ) was from 1979 to 1995 bassist of Huey Lewis & the News.

Equipment

Cipollina played during his career, especially Gibson SGs, briefly, a model from Carvin, but is now placed in retrospect, particularly in connection with the former guitar.
