John Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Weimar

Johann Ernst II ( born September 11, 1627 Weimar, † May 15, 1683 ibid ) was Duke of Saxe- Weimar. He was from the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin.

Life

Johann Ernst II was a son of Duke Wilhelm of Saxe- Weimar (1598-1662) from his marriage with Eleonore Dorothea (1602-1664), daughter of Prince Johann Georg I of Anhalt -Dessau. Johann Ernst was trained poorly in the days of Thirty Years War. He later attended the University of Jena and made ​​his Grand Tour to Italy and France.

On August 14, 1656 Johann Ernst in Weimar married Christine Elizabeth ( 1638-1679 ), daughter of Duke Johann Christian of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg. To entertain his household received Johann Ernst after some children were born in wedlock, the Office Oldisleben. Included by his father in the government's work, he oversaw the hunting and forestry in the Duchy.

After the death of his father he became reigning duke. Four weeks after the death of his father, he shared his property with his brothers. Johann Ernst II retained Weimar, his brother Adolf Wilhelm received the offices Wartburg and Clemda of Saxe- Eisenach, Johann Georg I received the offices Creuzburg and Crayenburg of Saxe- Eisenach, his other brother Bernhard received Saxe- Jena. After the extinction of the line of Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 it came to a dispute with Saxe-Gotha to the inheritance, which he was able to acquire about a quarter of the country of Saxe-Weimar. Then he compared himself again with his remaining brothers Bernhard and Johann Georg.

While his father, William IV, especially in cultural matters of importance made ​​(see Fruitful Society), Johann Ernst II gave away only his passion for hunting and left the government of his country in large part to his chancellor. After a fall from a horse in 1680 one of his legs was paralyzed, he died of dropsy three years later. He was buried in the newly built royal crypt of the Weimar Castle Church.
