John Francis Dearden

John Francis Cardinal Dearden (* October 15, 1907 in Valley Falls, † August 1, 1988 in Southfield ) was Archbishop of Detroit.

Life

Youth and consecration

The son of John Sidney Dearden and his wife Agnes Gregory visited in his home town of the Elementary School Holy Trinity School and later the St. Philomena School in Cleveland, where his family dragged on in 1918.

Dearden visited the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School and the Seminary of St. Mary 's Seminary. For the completion of his studies he went to Rome and studied at the Pontifical North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University. He received from Cardinal Vicar Cardinal Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani on 8 December 1932, the ordination. In 1934 he completed his studies.

Bishops and priests

Dearden was then working as a pastor in Ohio until 1937 a professor of philosophy at St. Mary 's Seminary received, which he headed as rain from 1944 to 1948. On July 19, 1945, he was awarded the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness.

Pope Pius XII. appointed him on 13 March 1948 to the Coadjutor Bishop of Pittsburgh and Titular Bishop of Sarepta. The Apostolic Delegate in the United States Amleto Giovanni Cicognani consecrated him on 18 May of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Edward Francis Hoban, Bishop of Cleveland and Floyd Lawrence Begin, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland.

Its strict manner of administration brought him in this time the nickname Iron John. After the death of Hugh Charles Boyle he resigned on December 22, 1950 its successor as bishop of Pittsburgh.

On 18 December 1958 he was called by Pope John XXIII. appointed Archbishop of Detroit.

Second Vatican Council

He participated in the Second Vatican Council in 1965 to 1962. During the Council showed Dearden's liberal views and he was referred to as one of the leading progressive voices in the church. He campaigned for greater involvement of priests and laity in the areas of liturgy, education and finance.

From 1966 to 1971, Dearden the first president of the U.S. Bishops' Conference.

Cardinal

On April 28, 1969 it took Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pio X alla Balduina in the College of Cardinals. While a synod of bishops at the Vatican Dearden suggested in 1971 can be investigated before the sociological and psychological aspects of the priesthood.

He participated as one of the cardinal electors participated in the conclaves of August and October 1978, which chose John Paul I and John Paul II. After 21 years of service as Archbishop of Detroit, John Paul II took on July 15, 1980 to his early resignation.

After the Watergate scandal, the Cardinal called on Catholics to observe the first three Fridays in November 1973 with prayer, penance and fasting.

Dearden died at the age of 80 from pancreatic cancer in Southfield, Michigan. He is buried in the Catholic cemetery of the same city. Dearden already survived a heart attack.
