John Haswell

John Haswell ( born March 20, 1812 in Lancefield, United Kingdom, † June 8, 1897 in Vienna) was an engineer and locomotive designer.

John Haswell studied at the Andersonian University in Glasgow and worked with 22 years in the shipbuilding Office of William Fairbairn & Co.

In 1837 he designed at the request of Matthias Schönerer, who was instrumental also in the horse-drawn railway Budweis -Linz - Gmunden, the plans for the repair workshop of the Vienna - Raab railway (later Lokomotivfabrik the StEG ) and in 1839, by side of the mechanic force with the execution of these plans charge. As the workshop was completed, he took over their own line and led not only to repair work immediately also includes the construction of railway rolling stock.

Among other things, he is responsible for:

  • First six-coupled steam locomotive in Austria " Fahrafeld " (1846 )
  • Participation in the Semmering Competition 1851 with the locomotive " VINDOBONA " which was an example for the later Engerth Mountain Locomotives
  • First eight-coupled steam locomotive in Austria "Vienna - RAAB " (1855 )
  • Vapor barrier for the first time performed on the " STEYER VILLAGE " (1861 )
  • Hydraulic forging press ( 1862), the first time allowed the presses heavy machine parts in dies (now the Technical Museum Vienna )
  • Corrugated iron firebox (1872 )

1882 Haswell put his body down.

He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Döblinger Cemetery (Group 10, Number 1) in Vienna. In 1936 in Vienna Floridsdorf ( 21st district ) was named the hate Well alley after him.
