John Hawkins (author)

Sir John Hawkins ( * March 30, 1719 in London, † May 21 1789 in London) was an English jurist and historian of music.

Sir John Hawkins studied law and worked until 1753 as a lawyer and judge in various offices. Then he allowed a rich marriage, solely to give his already long -standing passion for musicology.

As a result of the now begun by him with zeal musicological studies he published in 1776 his History of the science and practice of music in 5 volumes, a work which is famous simultaneously published History of Music by Charles Burney in value not inferior and still currently highly valued ( new ed, London 1876, 2 vols ).
