John I, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken

John I of Pfalz- Zweibrücken ( born May 8, 1550 in Meisenheim; † August 12, 1604 in Germersheim ) was from 1569 until his death, Count Palatine and Duke of Palatinate -Zweibrücken and was also active as a genealogist of his house and the house of his wife Magdalene of Jülich -Cleves -Berg. He founded the younger line Zweibrücken.

Life

John was the second son of the Count Palatine and Duke Wolfgang of Zweibrücken (1526-1569) from his marriage to Anna (1529-1591), daughter of Count Philipp I of Hesse. To the education of the prince took care among others Georg Marius, who acted reformist Johann and was therefore dismissed by John Lutheran father.

While in the inheritance his older brother Philipp Ludwig received the Principality of Pfalz- Neuburg, Johann fell to the Principality of Pfalz- Zweibrücken, his father had considerably impacted financially. As the world's first ruler in 1592, he led a compulsory education. From the year 1593 Johann moved Huguenots in Annweiler. John's tomb in the Zweibrücker Alexander Church was destroyed in the Second World War.

John I married in 1579 in Bergzabern Magdalena ( 1553-1633 ), daughter of Duke William of Jülich -Cleves -Berg, with whom he had the following children:
