John III of Bergen op Zoom

Johann III. of glyme or Jan III. van Bergen (* October 15, 1452 in Bergen op Zoom, † January 20, 1532 in Brussels) was from 1494 Lord of Bergen op Zoom, Walhain, Bierbais, glyme, Woude, Wavre, Grimbergen and others.

Life

Johann III. was first chamberlain of Philip the Handsome, Maximilian I and Charles V in 1481 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece and a member of the Privy Council. 1508 he was sent to England to arrange the marriage of Mary Tudor ( 1496-1533 ) with Karl, but did not materialize ( she instead married Louis XII. France). Johann III. was governor, captain general and Bailiff of the County of Namur, adviser to Margaret of Austria, daughter of Maximilian and Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands (1507-1530), and in 1530 the executor. He corresponded with Thomas More, Erasmus, Thomas Wolsey and Henry VIII of England.

Buried in the St. Gertrude 's Church in Bergen- op-Zoom.

Family

Johann III. was the son of John II of glyme and Margaret of Rouveroy. He married Adrienne de Brimeu, daughter of Guy de Brimeu, Seigneur de Humbercourt (House Brimeu ), and Antoinette de Rambures. The marriage contract dated 12 December 1487th Adrienne died on 31 May / 1. June 1500 Their children were:

Since Johann III. his two older sons survived, which also both died without heirs, his youngest son Anton became his successor.
