John J. Gosper

John Jay Gosper (* 1841, † May 15, 1913 ) was an American politician ( Republican) and businessman who has held the post of Secretary of State of Nebraska and the Secretary of Arizona Territory. Furthermore, it was after John C. Frémont his office as governor gave, Acting Governor of the Arizona Territory.

When the Civil War broke out, he volunteered for service in the Union Army. He reached the rank of Colonel. In addition, he lost in a battle his left leg. After the war he moved to Nebraska, where he was elected Secretary of State.

Subsequently, he was appointed by U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes to the Secretary of the Territory in the Arizona Territory. Gosper arrived in Arizona on May 30, 1877. He worked under the governors Hoyt and Frémont.

The Gosper County, Nebraska is named after him.
