Richard Elihu Sloan

Richard Elihu Sloan ( born June 22, 1857 in Morning Sun, Butler County, Ohio; † December 13, 1933 in Phoenix, Arizona ) was an American politician and the last governor of the Arizona Territory. He was also a member of the Republican Party and a Presbyterian.

Sloan held various positions in the Government of the Arizona Territory. He was 1888-1889 member of the Territorial Council. He was also 1889-1893 and again then 1897-1909 Justice of the Territorial Supreme Court He also acted in 1908 as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Arizona. In 1909 he was elected to the territorial governor, a position which he held until 1912, when Arizona was admitted as 48th state in the Union. After his term as Governor, he was appointed by President William Howard Taft to be a judge at the Federal District Court for Arizona, and held this post from 1912 to 1913.

Sloan was a lifelong resident of Prescott. He died on December 13, 1933 in Phoenix and was buried in Greenwood Memorial Park.
