John Joe Joyce

John Joe " Johnny" Joyce ( born October 17, 1987 in Limerick, County Westmeath ) is an Irish boxer. He won at the 2008 European Championships in Liverpool and was a bronze medal Olympian in Beijing in 2008, both times in the light welterweight.

Career

Johnny Joyce or JJJ, as it is also called, began in childhood with the boxes and has become one of the best junior and senior boxers of Ireland in the light or light welterweight. It belongs to the amateur boxing club at St Michael's Athy BC, where it is trained by Dominic O'Rourke. He was Irish junior champion at lightweight with a points victory over Donald Ward, 2005. He started this year already with the Irish Seniors Championships, had there but bad luck, as he could not compete at lightweight in the quarter-final against David Anthony because of an injury.

In 2005 he started at junior level in international boxing matches. In a tournament in Volgograd with the martial name Battle of Stalingrad, he left at lightweight against Cuban Ivan Onate by one point defeat and finished 5th. A little later he competed in the European Junior Championships in Tallinn. After three victories, he was defeated there in the semi-final against Andriy Lukiynchuk from the Ukraine and won a bronze medal.

2006 Johnny Joyce was first Irish champion in the seniors at lightweight. He hit play in the final John Paul Campbell convincingly on points ( 21:2 ). He then finished the British 4- Nationas -Tournament in Dublin at lightweight with wins over Anthony Crolla, England ( 23:14 ) and Mitch Prince, Scotland ( 24:11 ) 1st place. He started this year also the Bee -Gee -Tournament in Helsinki, but was defeated there in the lightweight semi-final against Anton Ryschenkow from Russia just by points ( 27:30 ).

In the Irish Cup 2007 Johnny Joyce won the title in the light welterweight division with a victory in the final point about Thomas Dwyer. In a meet against Russia in Athlone him then scored a points victory over Gennadi Rybalko. He then competed in the Feliks strain tournament in Warsaw. He won there over Vazgen Safarjants from Belarus and Ovidiu Bobîrnat from Cyprus before the semi-final against Krzysztof Szot from Poland to points he lost ( 17:22 ). In the championship of the European Union in Dublin, he triumphed over Ryan Evans from Scotland by termination in the 2nd round and was defeated in the quarterfinals against the Hungarian world-class boxers Gyula Kate just by points ( 18:21 ). In October 2007, Johnny Joyce also launched at the World Championships in Chicago. There he met in his first fight back on Gyula Kate and subject to that again on points ( 17:32). He got away with it in the light welterweight not under the last 32 boxers.

2008 Johnny Joyce again Irish champion in the light welterweight division with a demolition victory in the 3rd round about Jamie Kavanagh. Then he tried to qualify for the Beijing Olympic Games in Pescara. He won there in the Light Welterweight about Vasili Belous from Moldova to points and Milan Piperski from Serbia by demolition in the 3rd round. In the semifinals he was defeated by Ionut Gheorghe from Romania just after points ( 20:25 ). He finished in 3rd place in the tournament. For Olympics but qualified only the two finalists. He began, therefore, even at the last European Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens. He triumphed over Zdenek Chladek, Czech Republic, Gevorg Galstjan, Greece, Harun Sipahi, Germany and Egidius Kavaliauskas from Lithuania, won this tournament and therefore the ticket to Beijing.

In the championship of the European Union in Cietniewo / Poland he met again Gyula Kate and subject to that again on points. The victory of Kate fell even very clear with 23:7 hits. Johnny Joyce finished in 5th place. He then competed in the Olympic boxing tournament in Beijing. The accident left him there in his first fight again meet Gyula Kate. In the fourth fight against Kate in the years 2007 and 2008 he managed in Beijing finally their first victory against Kate, who even marked than with 9:5. In the next fight he met in Beijing on Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic, to which he gave an excellent fight. At the end of this match was 11:11. After inducing contraction of not ratified by at least three judges Diaz hit the scarcest of all possible point victory was awarded. Johnny Joyce was eliminated by Diaz later became Olympic champion.

He won in October 2008 in Dublin, the Irish qualifying tournament for the 2008 European Championship in Liverpool with point victories over John Murray, Philip Sutcliffe and Stepahn Donnelly. At the European Championships in Liverpool, he won over John Thain from Scotland and Dimitar Schtilianow from Bulgaria, before he again lost in the semi-final against Gyula Kate that finished 3rd place.

At no medal, it was enough for John Joe Joyce at the European Championships 2010 in Moscow. He lost there welterweight in the quarterfinals against Taras Schelestjuk from Ukraine on points (1:9).
