John M. Deutch

John Mark Deutch ( born July 27, 1938 in Brussels) was from 1994 to 1995 Deputy Secretary of Defense ( Deputy Secretary of Defense ) of the USA and of 10 May 1995 CIA Director until 14 December 1996. He is professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the boards of directors of Citigroup, Cummins, Raytheon and Schlumberger.

Deutch was born in the Belgian capital, Brussels, the son of an Ashkenazi father. He made at Amherst College with a BA in History and Economics. At MIT, he studied Chemical Engineering ( BSc 1961) and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry.

From 1977 to 1980 he held various posts at the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 1995 he was appointed by U.S. President Bill Clinton as director of the CIA. He continued the policy of his predecessor James Woolsey. This included the publication of records of covert operations during the Cold War. He sat up a stand to hire more women and minorities in the CIA.

Soon after Deutch left the CIA in 1996, it was revealed that several were saved as secret, as data on his laptop and designated as unclassified. In January 1997, the CIA launched an investigation, but Deutch was pardoned by Bill Clinton on his last day in office.
