John Monks

John Stephen Monks, Baron Monks (* August 5, 1945 in Manchester, England ) is a British trade union official and Labour Party politician.

Life

Monks attended Ducie Technical High School ( later to 2003: Ducie High School, today Manchester Academy) near the University of Manchester in the Lloyd Street North in the district of Moss Side, Manchester. He studied Economic and Social History ( Economic History ) at the University of Nottingham.

From 1967 to 1969 he worked as a Management Trainee and Junior Manager in the electronics and telecommunications company Plessey Ltd in Surrey.

In 1969 he joined the Trades Union Congress (TUC ), the umbrella organization of trade unions in the UK, a. For the TUC Monks practiced in the following years various functions. He was from 1969 from 1974 assistant in the Department of Organization and then from 1974 to 1977 Deputy Secretary ( Assistant Secretary ) of the Organization Department. In 1977 he was at the TUC Head ( Head ) of the Organisation and Industrial Relations Department. In 1987, he was Deputy Secretary-General ( Deputy General Secretary ) of the TUC. He was elected General Secretary (General Secretary ) of the TUC in 1993. He held until 2003 this office.

In 2003 he became the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation ( European Trade Union Confederation, ETUC) selected. In 2007 he was re-elected. 2011 ended his second term. As General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation Monks warned against too tough austerity of the European Union.

Monk was a member of various national and international bodies. He was a member of the Council of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service ( ACAS ) of Great Britain ( 1979-1995 ), a non-governmental organization to improve working condition and support of employers and employees, and the Economic and Social Research Council ( 1988-1991). He was furthermore Deputy Chairman of the Learning and Skills Council, England (2001-2004) and 2000/2001 Chairman of the Co-operative Commission, an independent commission set up by Tony Blair to support managers in cooperatives.

Since 2008 he has been Vice - President ( Vice - President) of the Association of European Movement International. Monks is furthermore Chairman ( Chairman ) of the People's History Museum in Manchester. He is a member of the governing body ( Council) of the European Policy Centre in Brussels and the Centre for European Studies in London. He is a visiting professor at the Manchester Business School.

Membership in the House of Lords

July 26, 2010 Monks was appointed Life Peer. He bears the title of Baron Monks of Blackley in the County of Greater Manchester. In the House of Lords he sits for the Labour Party.

Honors

Monks has been awarded several honorary doctorates. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester, University of Salford, Cranfield University and the University of Cardiff.

Personal

Monks married in 1970 in North West Surrey Francine Schenk. The marriage produced three children, two sons and a daughter. His hobby is one of Monk's music, sports, and hiking.

He supports Manchester United FC, Swinton Lions Rugby League Club to and Lancashire County Cricket Club.
