John Munford Gregory

John Munford Gregory ( born July 8, 1804 Charles City County, Virginia; † April 9, 1884 ) was an American politician and from 1842 to 1843 Governor of Virginia.

Early years and political rise

John Gregory visited in Williamsburg until 1830, the College of William & Mary. He was a member of the Whig party and sat 1832-1836 and 1839-1841 in the House of Virginia. Then he moved to the state Senate.

Governor of Virginia

As president of that body, he was the successor to the incumbent Governor John Rutherfoord. Meanwhile, since the terms of office of the Governor of Virginia were extended to three years and the beginning of the terms of office had been set to January, he was able to hold that office between March 31, 1842 to January 1, 1843. His two predecessors, John M. Patton and John Rutherfoord had also been only incumbent governors. The last official governor was Thomas Walker Gilmer was, which was in 1841 resigned due to his appointment as U.S. Secretary of the Navy. Gregory was thus according to Gilmer, Patton and Rutherfoord the fourth governor in a legislature.

Between 1853 and 1860 Gregory federal prosecutor was for the eastern part of Virginia. From 1860 to 1866, including during the Civil War, he was a judge in the sixth judicial district of his state. After the war he was deposed by the military authorities of the Union because Virginia was part of the Confederate States, and Gregory himself was also slaveholders. Gregory was then working as a lawyer. He was later taken over as District Attorney of Charles City County back into the civil service of Virginia. This office he held until 1880. Then he retired to retire to Williamsburg back. He died in 1884. John Gregory was married to Amanda Wallace.
