John Snyder (Pennsylvania)

John Snyder ( born January 29, 1793 in Selinsgrove, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, † August 15, 1850 ) was an American politician. Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Snyder was the son of Governor Simon Snyder ( 1758-1819 ). He attended the common schools. During the British - American War he was a captain in the state militia of Pennsylvania. Professionally, he was later involved in the manufacture of paper and in the oil business. Among other things, he worked for Snyder Spring Oil Co. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1840 Snyder was in the 16th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Robert Hanna Hammond on March 4, 1841. Since he has not been confirmed in 1842, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1843. This period was burdened by the tensions between President John Tyler and the Whigs. It was also at that time already been discussed about a possible annexation of the independent Republic of Texas since 1836 by Mexico.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Snyder took his previous activities on again. He died on 15 August 1850 in his hometown of Selinsgrove, where he was also buried.
