John Todd Zimmer

John Todd rooms ( born February 28, 1889 in Bridgeport, Ohio; † January 6, 1957 in White Plains, New York ) was an American ornithologist, entomologist, author, curator and chairman of the ornithological department of the American Museum of Natural History.

Life

His first career steps as naturalists were mainly affected by his life in Nebraska. Here he also included 1911 University of Nebraska- Lincoln from with undergraduate studies. A few years later, the conclusion followed a Master of Science. 1943, at the height of his career, he finally an honorary doctorate of science was awarded. At the beginning of his scientific career, rooms on the first specialized field of entomology. Despite his specialization he always had a focus on ornithology. So he collected during his time in college a variety of birds from Nebraska, which he bequeathed to the University of Nebraska. After his time at college he worked as a field entomologist for the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, which he also worked closely with the Ministry of Agriculture of the United States. In 1913 he went to the Ministry of Agriculture as Deputy Head of Department for pest control in the Philippines. Four years later he moved on to Port Moresby, where he worked as an expert for the Ministry of Agriculture of Papua New Guinea. Here he also met Margaret Thompson, whom he married in 1917.

Both had two children together, a son named Lawrence Thompson room and a daughter named Ida Elithabeth room Sprague. His wife died in October 1944. Relatively little from his time in Southeast Asia known. Nevertheless, he published in 1918 in the Philippine Journal of Science two articles on the birds of the Philippines. The birds, which he had collected in Southeast Asia, he sold to the American Museum of Natural History. Ernst Mayr use the birds of Papua New Guinea for his book List of New Guinea birds: a systematic and faunal list of the birds of New Guinea and Adjacent islands. After his return to the U.S. he worked for a short time at the Museum of the University of Nebraska. But soon he got an offer from the Field Museum of Natural History. Here he published together with Wilfred Hudson Osgood two volumes of the Catalogue of the Ayer Ornithological Library. During his time in Chicago, he also took part in the Conover - Everard expedition in Africa, as well as sponsored by Berthold Laufer and David Charles Davies Captain Marshall expedition in Peru. In particular, the time in Peru produced numerous publications under the name of Studies of Peruvian Birds.

Room for neotropical birds interest was piqued. It was Carl Eduard Hellmayr and Frank Michler Chapman, who lured him in 1930 as deputy curator to the American Museum of Natural History. 1935 followed the ascent to the executive curator, 1942 Curator. To William Henry Phelps Senior in Caracas he had an intense working relationship. He attended Phleps twice and published together with him articles about birds from Venezuela. Also to James Lee Peters he had a very good rapport. In 1942 Glover Morrill Allen died, he also assumed the post of editor of the ornithological journal The Auk. James Paul Chapin, the former president of the American Ornithologists ' Union, hit him before seinzeits for this position. In 1954, he took over from Robert Cushman Murphy chaired the ornithological department in the museum. Shortly time on sick room hard that he eventually ended up in a wheelchair.

Dedikationsnamen

In 1977, Melvin Alvah Traylor dedicated junior room the genus Zimmerius for his contributions to the systematics of neotropical birds and the unique contributions to the patterns on the wings of this genus. Osgood named 1936, a type of white toothed shrews from the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the name Crocidura zimmeri. Also, the Ferruginous thicket panties ( Synallaxis zimmeri ) ( Koepcke, 1957) and the Graukehltapaculo ( Scytalopus zimmeri ) ( Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1940) to honor room in their scientific name.
