John Woods (Pennsylvania)

John Woods ( * 1761 in Bedford, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, † December 16, 1816 in Brunswick County, Virginia ) was an American politician. In the years 1815 and 1816, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Woods was the older brother of Congressman Henry Woods ( 1764-1826 ). After studying law and his 1783 was admitted as a lawyer in Pennsylvania, he began to work in this profession. In 1784, he was also involved in planning the development of the city of Pittsburgh. Politically, he was a member of the late 1790s, founded by Alexander Hamilton Federalist Party. In 1797 he sat in the Senate of Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1814 Woods was in the 14th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Adamson Tannehill on March 4, 1815. But due to illness he was not able to attend the sessions of the Congress. The end of 1816 he went on a vacation trip to the South, where he died in Virginia on 16 December this year.

His home in Pittsburgh is listed as John Woods House on the National Register of Historic Places.
