Johnston Murray
Johnston Murray ( born July 21, 1902 in Emet, Johnston County, Oklahoma, † April 16, 1974 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma ) was an American politician and from 1951 to 1955 the 14th Governor of the State of Oklahoma.
Early years and political rise
Johnston Murray was the son of William H. Murray, who was 1931-1935 Governor of Oklahoma. He attended until 1924, the Murray State School of Agriculture. In the following years he worked in many professions. Among other things, he accompanied his father to Bolivia, where he was working as a rancher in the 1920s. After Johnston Murray worked in the newspaper business and then in the oil business. At times, he also worked for the Douglas Aircraft. Then in 1946 he made his law degree at the University of Oklahoma. He then joined as a lawyer in criminal proceedings on.
Like his father, Murray Johnston member of the Democratic Party. He was in the county executive of the party in Kay County. In the years 1940 and 1948, he belonged to the Electoral College to the presidential election. In 1950 he was elected as the new governor of his state, where he prevailed with 51.1 percent of the vote to Republican Jo O. Ferguson.
Governor of Oklahoma
Johnston Murray stepped up his new post on January 8, 1951. As Governor, he was against tax increases. He wanted his country more economic point lead than its predecessors. For this reason, the apparatus of government was reorganized again from the standpoint of economic efficiency. He was going on especially against money wastage. During his time Oklahoma lost due to a population decline two seats in Congress. Therefore, the electoral districts had to be reallocated for the congressional elections. At that time, the women were given the right to be allowed to do as jurors in court service.
After the end of his four-year tenure Johnson Murray worked as an attorney in Texas and Oklahoma. In addition, he was legal adviser to the Ministry of Welfare of Oklahoma. Johnston Murray died in 1974. He was married to Willie Roberta Emerson, the couple had a child together.
