Jonas Platt

Jonas Platt ( * June 30, 1769 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, † February 22, 1834 in Peru, Clinton County, New York ) was an American lawyer, judge, general of cavalry in the militia and politicians. He was the son of Zephaniah Platt, who also worked as a lawyer and politician, and brother of Charles Z. Platt, Minister of Finance of New York.

Private life

Jonas Platt attended a French Adakemie in Montreal ( Canada). He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1790 and began to practice in Poughkeepsie on. Platt was from 1791 to 1798 served as county clerk of Herkimer County and from 1798 to 1802 of Oneida County. Later he held 1814-1821 the post of assessors judge at the Supreme Court of New York.

Political action

Platt was in 1796 a member of the New York State Assembly. He was elected as a Federalist to the 6th U.S. Congress, where he served from March 4, 1799 to March 3, 1801. As a parliamentarian, he had presided over the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business. He decided not to stand for re-election. Platt then ran unsuccessfully in 1810 for the office of governor of New York. He was also from 1810 to 1813 Member of the Senate of New York. Last year, he was also a member of the Council of Appointments. Platt took in 1821 at the Constitutional Convention of New York.

He died in 1834 in Peru (New York) and was then on the Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh (New York) buried.
