Jörg Drehmel

Jörg Drehmel ( May 3, 1945 in Trantow ) is a former German track and field athlete and Olympic medal winner who - was in the triple jump successfully - starting for the GDR. His greatest successes were the silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics and the European title in 1971.

Life

Jörg Drehmel had initially tried to be a javelin thrower and decathlete and in 1966 was changed to the triple jump. His first big success was the victory at the European Cup in 1970, where as a valid record triple jump he managed at the same time as the first Germans over 17 meters. His winning distance of 17.16 m at the European Championships in 1971 could not be counted as a record, as it prevailed too much tailwind. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, he jumped 17.31 m personal best.

He started for the ASK Potsdam forward and trained at Heinz Rieger. To his competition time, he was 1.87 m tall and weighed 83 kg. In the becoming public knowledge after the fall of documents on doping in the GDR was found in the doped athletes also the name of Drehmel.

After the end of his athletic career Jörg Drehmel was from 1977 youth coach for long and triple jump. After the end of the GDR, he lost this job and later became assistant at the Brandenburg State Sports Association. He is currently a volunteer instructor jump at SC Potsdam. Drehmel lives in Stahnsdorf near Potsdam.
