Jose ben Halafta

Yose ben Chalafta (Hebrew: רבי יוסי בן חלפתא, in the Mishnah - about 330 times - always just called Rabbi Jose; * after 130, † 160 ) was a Jewish scholar of the ancient world and was among the Tannaim of the second century.

In secular profession he was a " leather worker" ( 49 bSchabb. b ) (= Gerber ). His most important teacher was, apart from his father, Rabbi Akiba ( bJeb 62 b). Authorized ( " Smicha " ), he was, even though the Emperor Hadrian had it expressly forbidden, together with four other students ( Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehuda ben Ilai, Rabbi Shimon ben Jose, Rabbi Eleazar ben Shammua ) by Rabbi Yehudah ben Baba ( bSanh 14 a ), who had to pay the infringement with his death as a martyr.

Jose b. Chalafta later taught in Sepphoris, where he accordingly instructed by the Romans, had to remain living forcibly; yet there are still pending later times documentary evidence of his stay in Usha, where he stood in high esteem.

R. Jose was a significant Halachist, usually decided according to whose view was ( bEruw. 46 b); in the tradition he is regarded as Haupttradent the existing Jewish chronology ( Seder Olam Rabbah fixed in only Seder Olam originally called ).

R. Jose is often regarded (including by Hanoch Albeck ) as the author of kilim.

Because of its characterological straightness, its peacefulness, piety and modesty, he was later referred to as " the Holy One " ( jBer. III, 6 c). Legendary are his encounters with the prophet Elijah.

Jose's motto read ( Ethics of the Fathers IV, 6):

Yose ben Chalafta had five sons had married his wife, which he, after his brother had died childless, in fulfillment of the commandment of levirate marriage.
