José Luis Laguía Martínez ( born September 3, 1959 in Pedro Muñoz ) is a retired Spanish road bicycle racer and current - functionary. In the 1980s, he was considered one of the world's best mountain climbers and won five times the corresponding rating jersey of the Vuelta a España - a hitherto unprecedented record.

Life and athletic career

Laguía came in the small community of Pedro Muñoz in the central Spanish province of Ciudad Real to the world, but was adopted and grew up in Catalonia.

At the age of 20 he took first time in 1980 at the Vuelta a España and was able to immediately secure the third place in the mountains classification. In the subsequent discharge, he won the maillot de la montaña. 1982 Laguías successful year: in addition to his second Vuelta mountain jersey - this time connected with three race wins - he secured overall victories in the Basque Country Tour and the Burgos - tour, was Spanish champion in the road race and also won stages in the Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme and the prestigious tour of Catalonia. The second defense of the Mountain jerseys succeeded him in 1983, when he outclassed the competition for the second-placed Italian Fiorenzo Aliverti by a margin of 59 points. During the racing season of 1984 was rather disappointing for him, he was in 1985 and 1986 to build on previous achievements. After his retirement from competitive sports, he worked two years as a Talent scouts in Catalan amateur.
