Josef Labor

Josef Labor ( born June 29, 1842 in Horowitz, Bohemia, † April 26, 1924 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer, organist and pianist.

Life

He received his education at the Institute for the Blind in Vienna, his musical training took place at the Music Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music, among others Simon Sechter and pianist Eduard Pirkhert. In 1865 he was appointed Royal Chamber pianists of the Hanoverian court niches, after the occupation of Hanover by Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War, in which Hanover fought at the side of Austria, moved lab with King George V in 1866 to Vienna into exile. Here he worked as a piano teacher, inter alia, by Arnold Schoenberg, Julius Bittner and Paul Wittgenstein, and was close friends with many, even younger, fellow musicians, including with Franz Schmidt. The 19 - year-old Alma Schindler ( later Alma Mahler -Werfel ) was a student of Josef Labor.

His piano playing was praised by contemporary critics for its technical perfection and not just "plastic beauty ", also his comprehensive understanding of art was emphasized. In 1875 he was also trained in Gmunden by the famous church musician Johann Evangelist Habert organist and was built in 1904 by the award of the title " kuk Court organist " excellent. At the request of his disciple Paul Wittgenstein in 1912 almost all of his works were relocated at the expense of the Wittgenstein family of Universal Edition. His estate is located in Vienna's city library.

He is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Vienna Central Cemetery ( 15E -16 -17). In 1936 in Vienna Ottakring ( 16th district ) of Laborweg was named after him.
