Joseph Marius Babo

Marius Joseph Franz von Babo ( born January 14, 1756 in Ehrenbreitstein; † February 5, 1822 in Munich) was a German writer.

Babo was the son of kurtrierischen captain Johann Carl Babo and his wife Maria Anna Sittmann. After his schooling Babo studied in Koblenz at the Jesuit College aesthetics.

After his successful completion of 1774, he got 18 years employment as a Secret Secretary at the Municipal Theatre in Mannheim. From 1778 to 1789 he was director of the electoral theater company. In 1781 he settled in Munich, where to September 11, 1810 at the National Theatre, he worked as a director on 13 March 1792.

1784 accused Babo in his book About Frey Maurer the Bavarian Illuminati by Adam Weishaupt to commit a conspiracy against the state, and was therefore one of the first occasions for official prohibition and dissolution of the Order and for the prosecution of its members.

In 1789 he received an appointment as director of studies at the Munich Military Academy and held this office until 1799. 1792 appointed to Babo theater commissioner and seven years later he was promoted to the electoral Bücherzensurrat. In 1807 he was elected a full member of the Philological and philosophical class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

Babo Knight wrote dramas in imitation of idol of Berlichingen by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He celebrated his biggest success with the drama Otto of Wittelsbach.

His image vigorous and effective stage pieces learned numerous performances. His comedies that focus on the contrast between unsophisticated citizenship and charakterschwachem nobility enjoyed great popularity among his contemporaries.

At the age of 66 years died Marius Joseph Franz von Babo on 5 February 1822 in Munich.
