Joseph Rampal

Joseph Rampal (born 12 September 1895 in Marseille, † January 12, 1983 in Paris) was a French flautist, high school teacher and father of the flutist Jean -Pierre Rampal.

Joseph Rampal was the son of a goldsmith and music lover. From the age of 12 he took lessons at the Marseille Conservatoire and from 1913 he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under Adolphe Hennebains, where he was in 1914 awarded a Deuxième Prix. After the outbreak of World War I immediately drafted into the army and wounded twice, Rampal was able to continue until the end of 1918 his studies in Paris at Léopold Lafleurance. In 1919 he was awarded a Prix d'Excellence for outstanding performance interpretation.

After studying Rampal returned to Marseille, where he was principal flute - made ​​a name - even in orchestras of silent film. In 1925 he was appointed professor at the Conservatoire in Marseille and in 1938 was principal flute of the Radio Orchestra Marseille. Among his many students during the up in the 1960s, reaching teaching included not only his only son Jean -Pierre Maxence Larrieu, for example, and Alain Marion.
