Jouko Törmänen

Jouko Sihveri Törmänen ( born April 10, 1954 in Rovaniemi ) is a former Finnish ski jumper. Today he works as a sports official.

Career

Making his first appearance at an international jumping he had on January 6, 1968 Four Hills Tournament at Innsbruck Bergisel. He immediately reached the sixth place, but it should be his only appearance for two years. From 1972 to 1982, he then took part in all the jumping tour. But he reached the podium, namely in 1978 a third place in Innsbruck only once.

In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1974 in Falun, he reached on the large hill in fifth in the 1978 World Cup in Lahti sixth.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1976, he was ranked 14 on the normal hill and the tenth on the large hill, at the Games in 1980 in Lake Placid then surprisingly the gold medal on the large hill after eighth of the normal hill. It was his first victory in an international competition and, as the Nordic World Ski Championships 1980 were held at the Olympic games, at the same time he was world champion. In Ski Jumping World Cup, which was first played in the 1979/80 season, he still managed a victory in 1980 in Falun. His successes include four titles in Finnish Championships: 1976, 1977, 1979 and 1980, he won the normal hill. After the winter 1981/82 he ended his athletic career.

In 1988 he became a member of the Finnish skiing association. From 1993 to 2002 he was Vice President. He became chairman of the Department of ski jumping and Nordic combined early as 1992. In June 2004, he was Chairman of the International Ski Federation FIS in the discipline of ski jumping after the resignation Torbjørn Yggeseths.
