Juan Manuel Blanes

Juan Manuel Blanes ( born June 8, 1830 in Montevideo, Uruguay, † April 15, 1901 in Pisa, Italy ) was a Uruguayan painter. He was a representative of realism. His favorite subjects were historical events and the lives of the gauchos.

Life

His youth was marked by civil war in Uruguay. During this time he worked as a printer 's assistant. As an artist he was largely self-taught. Blanes began to paint in 1844 and moved in 1855 to Salto, where painting taught. In 1857 he moved to Buenos Aires, 1859, he received a scholarship for a stay in Italy.

Blanes saw themselves as American painter. In his works, he placed great emphasis on historical accuracy and detail. In addition to his history paintings he created numerous idealized and romanticized depictions of gaucho life.

1898 moved Blanes to Pisa in Italy, where he died three years later. The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1930 in Montevideo, Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes " Juan Manuel Blanes ," bears his name. A few meters east of the Teatro Solís there is a monument in honor of the painter.
