Juhani Salmenkylä
Juhani Salmenkylä ( born March 8, 1932 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish orienteers and basketball player. He was European champion in 1964 with the Finnish Orienteering Relay, with whom he won two silver medals at world championships.
Salmenkylä was founded the 1943 Club Helsingin Suunnistajat, one of the leading orienteering clubs in Finland at this time, to. With this club he won in 1950 with 18 years also the first time the Jukola relay race, in 1954 his first Finnish championship titles with the club season. At the same time he was a member of the basketball team Pantterit from Helsinki, the nine times won the Finnish championship titles in the 1950s. Also known as Athlete Salmenkylä was active and won bronze at the 1953 Finnish Championships with the 4-x -1500- meter relay. In 1954, he won with the team the Helsingin Suunnistajat the Tiomila Competition in Sweden. In 1955 Salmenkylä at the first Nordic Championships in Sweden Kolmården and had there only to Sweden Marthe Andersson beaten. Four years later he was ernaut second, this time behind Magne Lystad from Norway. The first international title won Juhani Salmenkylä 1964 at the second Orienteering Championships in Le Brassus, Switzerland. In a season with Rolf Koskinen, Aimo Tepsell and Erkki Kohvakka he won Season gold. While Kohvakka and Tepsell in the individual race won gold and bronze, Salmenkylä was only 17, the same year he was during the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 head of the national basketball team of Finland and member of the arbitral tribunal. In 1966 he won the O- rings in Sweden. In the first two World Orienteering Championships in 1966 and 1968, he missed the podium in the individual competitions scarce, with the season, he won two silver medals. In 1969 he became chairman of the Finnish Basketball Association and retained the post until 1972. 1970 he was once again the winner Jukola Relay, which he now won for the seventh time after 1950, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1957 and 1960. From professional Salmenkylä is a lawyer. His father Anton Husgafvel, who accepted in 1936 the name was Salmenkylä, 1924 as athlete participants in the Summer Olympics in Paris and later took part in competitions in orienteering. A stir the family Salmenyklä made in the Finnish Orienteering Championships 1951, when Anton Salmenkylä took victory in the class M50, brother Matti Juhani Salmenkylä champion in the class M20 was Juhani and even won the title in the juniors. He is married to the architect Pirkko Salmenkylä (nee Niemi ). Pirkko Salmenkylä 1952 was Finnish champion in orienteering with the women's relay. In 1949 she had won in a Finnish basketball championship. For the national basketball team they played seven games. Her daughter, Leena Salmenkylä - Mattila, 1979 was Finnish champion in relay orienteering.
