Juliusz Leo

Franciszek Juliusz Leo ( * November 15, 1861 in Stebnyk at Drohobytsch, † February 21, 1918 in Kraków ) was mayor ( mayor ) of Krakow.

Born the son of a mining Council, who was promoted to manager of the Salt Mine in Wieliczka. Juliusz Leo 1879-1884 studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow law, then 1885-1887 Economics in Berlin. 1891-1904 he worked as a professor at the Jagiellonian University. In 1901 he was elected a deputy of the Galician parliament in Lviv. July 11, 1904 to February 21, 1918, he held three times the post of mayor ( mayor ) of Krakow.

1911 Juliusz Leo was to XII. Elected legislature of the Austrian Chamber of Deputies, since 1912, he was chairman of the Polish deputies circle.

In 1905 he bought the Austro- Hungarian authorities Wawel Hill with the Royal Castle and the cathedral from which were used before for military purposes, and began its renovation under the direction of Adolf Szyszko - Bohusz as the jewel of Polish culture.

1907-1915 arose from its initiative, the development plan of the city of Krakow, which included the connection of communities Dębniki, Zwierzyniec, Łobzów, Grzegórzki, Płaszów and the city Podgórze. Thus the urban area grew from 7 to 47 square kilometers.

In 1914 he was co-founder and first chairman of the National Main Committee ( Naczelny Komitet Narodowy ), which in the formation of the Polish Legions, the first legal Polish army. 20th century promoted.
