Juluka

Juluka was a South African band that was founded in 1969 by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu. Juluka means " sweat" and was the name of a bull, the Mchunu had.

Biography

At 14 Clegg met the Zulu street musician Charlie Mzila know who teaches him in Zulu music and dancing for two years. In 1969, Clegg and Mchunu met in Johannesburg to know where the 18 -year-old Mchunu had challenged the 16 -year-old Clegg to a Gitarrenwetbewerb.

The two first played on the road and other unofficial occasions, as far as was possible during the apartheid era. Clegg was arrested several times for these activities and the lyrics of the songs.

The first single, the song " Woza Friday" was published in 1976, three years later the album " Universal Men". The lyrics were influenced by John Berger's A Seventh Man work, Pablo Neruda and Jean -Paul Sartre.

After the group had strengthened in 1979 with Robbie Jansen and other musicians, in 1981, the album African Litany was issued. The song " Impi " over the defeat of the British Army against the Zulus at the Battle of Isandlwana was banned in South Africa, but was a hit in the underground. It was followed by a tour of Europe and North America in 1982 and 1983.

The group disbanded in 1985, when Mchunu went back to the farm his family. Clegg formed a new band, Savuka, which was even more successful internationally. In 1997, after a reunion of the band is still an album released, but was unable to repeat the success of the first albums.

Music

The band's music contains elements of Maskanda and Mbaqanga, popular South African music styles, as well as western folk and rock music. Several instruments were used for both guitar and traditional Zulu instruments, as well as saxophone and synthesizer.
