Juma Ikangaa

Juma Ikangaa ( born July 19, 1957 in Dodoma ) is a former Tanzanian marathon runner who in many races achieved top rankings in the 1980s.

Career

His breakthrough to the world class reached Juma Ikangaa when he won at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 in Brisbane in 2:09:30 hours silver, only twelve seconds behind the Australian winner Robert De Castella. At the 1984 Olympics the marathon was strongly influenced up to half of Juma Ikangaa and his compatriot Gidamis Shahanga. While Shahanga then fell back to Ikangaa lasted until the 35 km mark in the top group, first as the eventual winner Carlos Lopes intensified the pace Ikangaa had to be demolished. In the end, he finished sixth in 2:11:10 hours. 1983 and 1984 won Ikangaa at the Melbourne Marathon, 1984, the men's marathon in Tokyo.

1986 won Ikangaa again in Tokyo and improved his personal best to 2:08,10 hours. He also won the Fukuoka Marathon in late 1986. 1987 Ikangaa occupied the seventh place at the World Championships in Rome, in October he won the Beijing Marathon. 1988 Ikangaa occupied the second place in Tokyo, and the Boston Marathon, at the 1988 Olympic Games Ikangaa until kilometer 35 as four years earlier in the leading group and finished in 2:13:06 hours at the end of the seventh.

1989 occupied Ikangaa again took second place in Boston, but won in the fall at the New York City Marathon in 2:08:01 hours. In 1990, he occupied the third consecutive second place in Boston. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games Ikangaa was eleventh. Ikangaa ran a few years with, in big races, but failed to reach top places more.
