Juoksengi
Juoksengi is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Norrbotten County and in the historical province of Norrbotten.
Location
Juoksengi belongs to the municipality Övertorneå. The village is located about 130 km as the crow northeast of the provincial capital of Luleå and a good 20 km north- northeast of the main town of the municipality, Övertorneå, on the right bank of Torne älv which there marks the border with Finland. Juoksengi after Övertorneå the second largest town of the community.
Juoksengi is located right on the Arctic Circle. Through the village leads the Riksväg 99, the älv Haparanda along the Torne and runs the Finnish border to Karesuando. History
Juoksengi one of the oldest towns in the Torne Valley and already existed in the late Middle Ages. In the 16th century there were about 15 yards. The meaning of the place name, first mentioned as Jwxenge, Joxenge and Juxenhe is not clear, either from the Sami word juoksa for, bow ' - in relation to the running of the Torne älv south of the village - or, more likely, from a personal name Juoksa. 1760 first appeared on the today's Juoxengi similar names.
The village was älv on both sides of the Torne, but was separated in 1809 when Finland was annexed to the Russian Empire and the Torne älv state border. Since then, the districts developed separately; the village on the Finnish side now belongs to the municipality as Juoksenki Pello.
Since the mid-20th century the population of Juoksengi dropped by more than half. The place is dominated by agriculture; In addition, there are various transport and craft enterprises. In the village there is a consecrated in 1963 and 1984 extended church and a school.
