Jura, Scotland
Jura [ dʒʊərə ], Scottish Gaelic Diùra, English and Isle of Jura, is an island of the Inner Hebrides in Scotland. Jura is located northeast of the larger island of Islay and is part of the unitary authority Argyll and Bute. Its main town, Craig House.
Name
The name comes from Old Norse and means " deer island ". On the island there are about 5,500 red deer.
Geography
Jura, with an area of approximately 367 km ² slightly more than half the size of Islay, but is considerably more sparsely populated with only about 180 inhabitants.
The Paps
The Paps of Jura are a three quartzite mountain peaks formation. They are located in the southern half of the island and determine by their conical shape the silhouette Jura. The highest mountain is 785 meters high Beinn Oir ( German " Goldberg "). The Beinn Shiantaidh (Holy Mountain ) is 755 meters high and is located east of Beinn Oir, while the 734 -meter high Beinn a ' Chaolais ( " mountain on the Sound " ) is south-west. Cora Bheinn ( " Steep Mountain" ) with 569 meters is north-east of Beinn Shiantaidh, however, like other small peaks not part of the triad. On clear days, the " dad " are seen more than 100 kilometers.
Corryvreckan Swirl
North of the Island, in the Strait of Corryvreckan to the island Scarba out the Corryvreckan Swirl, one of the largest natural whirlpool of the Earth is. He is regarded as difficult to navigate and many people and animals has been fatal.
Traffic
Jura is only accessible via Islay with a small ferry that drives on the west coast investor Feolin on Islay Sound,. The capital of the island is Craig House. There are, among others, the Isle of Jura distillery and the only hotel on the island.
History, Historical Monuments
