The company was founded on 13 September 1927 as a subsidiary of the U.S. Victor Talking Machine Company, but broke up with the beginning of World War II from its parent company. Initially JVC dealt with the production of records and their improvement, such as the development of 45/45-Stereoformates. Due to the commercial success and the consequent widespread use VHS was the world quasi- standard for home video recorder.

Should be mentioned at least controversial role of JVC as a pioneer for worldwide circulation Macrovision analog copy protection. Under pressure from the film industry in 1985 the VHS standard of JVC has been modified. VHS licensee had the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) to change so that they reliably responded to the Macrovision pulses. ( The AGC is technically the opposite of automatic level for magnetic tape devices and should work without any user input correct video level, and thus the correct brightness of the recording to make sure. ) Up to this point, it depended on the AGC circuit of the respective video recorder on whether he on the copy protection signals like Macrovision Corporation did not respond or desired.

Starting in 1986, JVC has developed an improved VHS (S- VHS, the first model: HR- S5000 HR- S7000 PAL or NTSC) and the smaller VHS-C format for portable recorders and camcorders. 1995, the first digital camcorder followed in pocket format ( JVC GR DV -1) and plasma screens since 2002. Due to high losses of JVC, Matsushita began in 2007 with a partial sale to Kenwood and thus a reduction in the company's shares. On 1 October 2008 JVC JVC Kenwood to Kenwood was with Holdings KK ( JVCケンウッド· ·ホールディングス 株式会社, JVC Ken'uddo hōrudingusu kabushiki - gaihsa, Eng. JVC KENWOOD Holdings Inc.) closed.
