Kamchatka Oblast

The Kamchatka Oblast (Russian Камчатская область / Kamchatkaya oblast ) was until June 30, 2007 an administrative region ( oblast) in Russia. On 23 October 2005, the merger of Kamchatka Oblast was decided with the Koryak Autonomous District of the new subject called Kamchatka region for a referendum. This was formed on 1 July 2007.

The Kamchatka Oblast took the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula, which is traversed by the Sredinny - ridge. For area also include the commander islands. The territory of the former oblast was inhabited extremely thin, beyond two-thirds of the residents live in the former oblast and current regional capital Petropavlovsk -Kamchatsky. The Russians form the great majority, in addition to indigenous Siberian peoples find ( as Koryak and Itelmens ).

The first Russian explorers reached the region in the 17th century, 1740 Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was founded.

The main industries include shipbuilding, fishing and the timber industry. The mining industry promotes, among others, coal and gold. An increasingly important role does a tourism, especially in the Volcano and Geyser Basin, which also counts as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
