Kamikawa Subprefecture
Kamikawa (Jap.上 川 総 合 振兴 局, Kamikawa- sogo - Shinko - kyoku ) is a sub-prefecture of Hokkaido Prefecture. The name is derived from Kamikawa no hitobito no shuraku (川上 の 人 々 の 集落, dt "settlement of people from the upper reaches "), a translation into Japanese of the Ainu Peni Unguri Kotan. It has an area of 9852.21 km ² and a population of 535 456 (as of 1 October 2005).
History
