Kapišová

Kapišová (Hungarian Kapisó, russinisch Капішова / Kapischowa ) is a municipality in the north-eastern Slovakia, with a population of 410 (as at 31 December 2011) and is located in Okres Svidník, kraj a district of Prešov. Previously the place had a large Rusyn population, but today it has been largely assimilated by the Slovak population.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Low Beskid in the valley of the brook Kapišovka, off the main road to Duklapass, five kilometers from Svidník.

History

The town was first mentioned in writing in 1548 as Capyssowa after he was established around 1520. Kapišová formerly belonged to the manor Makovica ( based in the Castle Zborov ). 1828 are listed 46 houses and 342, the Greek-Catholic Church was completed in 1892.

Above the village a large tank battle took place in late 1944, held as part of Ostkarpatischen operation in World War II, so the valley now bears the nickname údolie smrti ( "Valley of Death ").
