Karasburg ( until 1939 Kalkfontein ) is a municipality and county seat of constituency Karasburg in southeastern Namibia, near the border with South Africa.

Karasburg has about 4300 inhabitants and an area of 39.9 km ².

North of Karasburg are the Karas Mountains. The district area is breeding area for Karakul sheep, and there are game farms to visit.

History

Karasburg was founded as a settlement of the Bondelswart, 1898, the area was purchased in 1909 by the British and the Germans, the latter erected here a railway station of Lüderitz Railway (with connection to Upington ). During the First World War it crossed the railway line promoted by South Africa, the border of the then German South-West Africa. Since then Karasburg is a railway border crossing. Only in 1929 was Karasburg to a village; on 15 October 1947, a community.

Karasburg has various academic and clinical facilities, 24 hours a day open gas station, an auto repair shop, a hotel, several fast food restaurants, a bank and the airfield Karasburg.
