Karl August Nicander

Karl August Nicander ( born March 20, 1799 in Strängnäs, † February 7, 1839 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish writer and poet. He is most known for his lyrical short poems. He was also a member of the Writers' Union Gothic covenant.

Life

Nicander attended the gymnasium of Strägnäs, where he was an intimate friend of Erik Sjöberg. In 1817 he moved to Uppsala and debuted with the lyrical works calendar för Damer ( "Calendar of Women " ), which was taken up by the organ of the neo-romantic school Svensk Literaturtidning with great applause. These poems were mostly reminiscences German and Swedish poetry. But this piece Korsets tro ( "Faith of the Cross" ) revealed his own poetic talent. 1820 Nicander had great success with the tragedy Runesvärdet och the Förste Riddaren ( " Rune sword and the First Knight " ), in which the poet describes a tragic fate in a period of transition from paganism to Christianity.

In 1822 he became a member of the Gothic federal, worked from 1823 in a law firm as a copyist in 1824 and Master of Arts. In 1827 he undertook, with the support of Crown Prince Oskar and the Swedish Academy, a trip to the land of his dreams, Italy. This period represented a turning point in his life dar. He had with great economic constraints, from which he could never work out later, return to his homeland. His friend Hugo Hamilton supported him after his return in 1829, paid his debts and travel took him in the years 1834-1835 when on.

For the stage edited Nicander Schiller's The Robbers (1834 ) and The Maid of Orleans ( 1836). He suffered from a severe heart disease and came during his last years of life under at the bookseller Adolf Bonnier.

Nicanders poems are characterized by eclectic poetry. He wrote in an unusually beautiful and sensuous form and was therefore popular in circles, which could for example Atterboms never reach deeper poetry. Nicanders poetry was precocious and revealed time, what was in it. But he missed more opportunities for development. Remarkably, individual lyrical short pieces like Vågen, Aftonen or Mitt lif, sång min, min död.
