Karl Eckstein

Karl Georg Wilhelm Eckstein ( born December 28, 1859 in Grünberg, Hesse, † April 22, 1939 in Dubrovnik ( Ragusa at that time ) ) was a German forester and entomologist who specialized in butterflies.

Life

Eckstein was the son of District Criminal Judge Ferdinand Eckstein ( 1822-71 ) and his wife Louise, née Becker, a pastor's daughter. He attended the grammar school in Giessen and then studied zoology at the university there. In 1886 he went to Eberswalde as an assistant to Professor Bernard Altum at the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Forestry Neustadt- Eberswalde, where he habilitated in 1890 and 1896 was titular professor. In 1900 he was Associate Professor of Forest Zoology and successor of Altum. After his retirement in 1925 he continued his teaching and research continued for another five years. He died during a holiday trip in 1939 in Dubrovnik.

From 1905 to 1911 he was the first chairman of the History Association Eberswalde, which he founded together with Mayor Ernst Hopf and others.

Work

The five-volume The butterflies of Germany (1913-1933) are his main work. In addition to forestry, it dealt with the fishery.
