Karl Heider (zoologist)

Karl Heider ( born April 28, 1856 in Vienna, † July 2, 1935 in Thinnfeld, German Feistritzwerke, Styria Castle ) was an Austrian zoologist.

Life

Origin and study

Heider was the son of Prof. Dr. Moritz Heider (1816-1866) founder of scientific dentistry Austria and from 1859 until his death in 1866, the first President of the Central Association of German Dentists ( CVdZ ) was, and of Marie, Baroness of Thinnfeld, whose father Ferdinand of Thinnfeld (1793-1868) was not only entrepreneurs, but at times also mining minister of Austria. Much maternal uncle was the geologist and mineralogist Wilhelm Ritter von Haidinger.

After schooling at Scots school in Vienna and at the upper secondary school in Maribor, he began in 1871 to study medicine and studied there until 1877, where it is less attended medical lectures, but rather that of the philosopher Alois Riehl, the botanist Hubert Leitgeb (1835 -1888 ), the paleontologist Karl Peters and the zoologist Franz Schulze Eilhard. In 1877 he moved to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Vienna and studied at the Institute of Zoology now Carl Claus, where he completed a lifelong friendship with his assistant Karl Grobben there.

After he completed his Doctor of Philosophy on 23 December 1879 he once again took a degree in medicine at the Department of the physiologist Ernst Wilhelm von bridge. He was also impressed by the work of the anatomist Carl Rabl, finished in 1883 graduated with a Doctor of Medicine and performed his military service thereafter until 1884.

High school teacher in Innsbruck and Berlin

After his habilitation he became a professor at the Leopold- Franzens- University of Innsbruck. Later he took a chair at the Department of Zoology at the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität zu Berlin. There he was in 1924 finally Director of the Zoological Institute.

In addition to his teaching, he also made ​​significant contributions in the field of evolutionary history of invertebrates.

He also spent several years on the board of the German Zoological Society ( DZG ) in third and first vice president and as president of 1914 until 1915.
